Running SEO for clients is a different job from doing it for one site. You need white-label reports a client will actually read, a way to manage many projects without accounts colliding, and pricing that still leaves margin once you multiply it across a roster. Most "best SEO software" lists ignore all of that and just rank tools by raw data.

This one ranks them by how well they work for an agency: white-label client reporting, multi-client management, technical depth, local coverage, and the ability to scale. I have ordered the list by agency fit, not by which tools pay me. Where a tool has no affiliate program, I have said so.

This page may contain affiliate links.

Some links on this page are affiliate links, meaning I may earn a commission if you sign up (at no extra cost to you). This never influences my ratings or recommendations.

Overview

The landscape

I track 54 tools in this category. Prices range from $9/mo (AnswerThePublic) to $139/mo (Semrush). The median starting price is $49/mo, so anything below that is a good deal.

14 tools offer free plans: Ahrefs, AnswerThePublic, MarketMuse, PromptWatch, and 10 more.

This roundup covers the 10 I consider worth a serious look. Each one is ranked with real pricing data, aggregated user ratings, and my honest take.

Audience

Who is this guide for?

  • Agencies that need to send white-label reports under their own brand
  • Freelancers scaling from a handful of clients to a full roster
  • In-house teams that manage SEO across many brands or locations
  • Agencies with local or multi-location clients who need local rankings and reviews
  • Agencies with a developer who want to build custom client dashboards at scale

Quick verdict

SE Ranking is my top pick for most agencies: white-label reports, client seats and a lead-gen audit widget at a price well below Semrush. Semrush wins if you want the deepest all-round data and a full client portal. Ahrefs is the sharpest for backlinks and competitor research.

AgencyAnalytics is the one to add for automated white-label client reporting, and DataForSEO if you have a developer and want to build dashboards cheaply at scale. Screaming Frog handles technical audits, BrightLocal covers local clients, and Morningscore is the most client-friendly for small shops.

SE Ranking

⭐ Top Pick
8.8/10
Best for: Agencies that want white-label client reports and lead-gen widgets without paying enterprise prices

Complete SEO platform with AI visibility tracking, rank monitoring, and competitive research tools.

Why I like it:SE Ranking is the tool in this list that was actually designed with agencies in mind. You get white-label reports under your own domain, client and project management, and an Agency Pack that adds client seats and an embeddable audit widget you can drop on your site to generate leads. It covers rank tracking, keywords, backlinks and audits in one place, and it ships a native MCP server on every plan, so you can point Claude at a client account and pull live data. For most agencies this is the best balance of price, data depth and client-facing features, which is why it is my top pick.

Key Features

White-label reports and dashboards with your own brandingClient and project management built inAgency Pack add-on (extra seats, client seats, lead generator widget)Rank tracking, keyword, backlink and audit data in one suiteNative MCP server and API on every plan for AI-agent access

Pros

  • Genuinely built for agencies: white-label, client seats, embeddable audit widget
  • Cheaper than Semrush or Ahrefs at comparable data depth
  • Native MCP server, so an AI agent can pull client data directly
  • Flexible pricing that scales with the number of keywords you track

Cons

  • White-label and extra client seats sit behind the paid Agency Pack add-on
  • Backlink index is smaller than Ahrefs or DataForSEO
  • Interface has a lot of surface area to learn

#2
Semrush

Semrush

Best All-in-One Suite
9.2/10
Best for: Larger agencies that want the deepest all-round dataset and a client portal, and can absorb the price

Complete SEO platform with AI search tracking, keyword research, competitor analysis, and content optimization tools.

Why I like it:Semrush is the heavyweight. If your agency needs the deepest keyword and competitor data, plus PPC, social and content tools in one login, nothing here matches its breadth. The Agency Growth Kit layers on a client portal, a lightweight CRM and white-label My Reports, which turns it into a genuine agency operating system. The catch is price: once you add seats and the Agency Kit, it is comfortably the most expensive tool on this page. For a larger agency billing that back to clients, it is usually worth it. For a two-person shop, it is a lot.

Key Features

Pros

  • Widest data coverage and feature breadth of any tool here
  • Agency Growth Kit adds a real client portal and white-label reporting
  • Official MCP server, well documented API
  • One account covers SEO, PPC, content and social for every client

Cons

  • The most expensive option here once you add seats and the Agency Kit
  • Deep feature set means a steeper onboarding for junior staff
  • Add-ons stack up quickly, so the real monthly cost is well above the sticker price

#3
Ahrefs

Ahrefs

Best for Backlinks and Competitive Research
8.3/10
Best for: Agencies whose edge is link building, competitor teardowns and content gap analysis

Comprehensive SEO platform with powerful backlink analysis and keyword research tools

Why I like it:Ahrefs is the tool agencies reach for when the job is backlinks, competitor analysis or finding content gaps. Its link index is the one most SEOs quietly treat as the source of truth, and Site Explorer makes taking apart a competitor fast and obvious. It is not built for client-facing reporting, and the shift to credit-based pricing means heavy use adds up, so I would run it alongside a suite or a reporting tool rather than as your only platform. For the research and link side of agency work, nothing here is sharper.

Key Features

MCP

Solid agent integration with official MCP support and well-documented API across Claude, ChatGPT, and Gemini. The official MCP server and public API docs make it straightforward to embed Ahrefs queries into agent workflows. Main limitation is the lack of webhooks and structured outputs, which restricts real-time automation and reduces output consistency for downstream processing.

Pros

  • Backlink data most agencies treat as the reference standard
  • Best-in-class competitor research and content gap analysis
  • Clean, fast interface that senior SEOs already know
  • Strong for the link-building and digital-PR side of client work

Cons

  • Moved to a credit-based model, so heavy use gets expensive fast
  • Limited seats on lower tiers make multi-user agency access pricey
  • No native white-label client reporting, you export or pair it with a reporting tool

#4
AgencyAnalytics

AgencyAnalytics

Best for White-Label Reporting
Best for: Agencies that lose hours every month hand-building client reports and want them branded and automated

White-label client reporting for agencies, aggregating 85+ marketing data sources with confirmed MCP access.

Why I like it:AgencyAnalytics solves the job agencies spend the most unbilled time on: client reporting. It pulls data from the tools you already run, Semrush, Ahrefs, Google Ads, Analytics and 80-plus others, into one white-label dashboard and sends branded reports on a schedule. It is not a data source, so it sits on top of your stack rather than replacing anything. What earns its place on an AI-stack list is the official MCP server: you can point Claude at a client account and ask for the insight instead of building the slide. At $20 per client a month on annual billing, it is the cleanest way to make client reporting stop eating your week.

Key Features

Pros

  • Turns data from all your other tools into one clean, branded client dashboard
  • Automated scheduled reports save the hours agencies waste on manual reporting
  • Official MCP server, rare for a reporting tool, so agents can pull client insights
  • Low per-client entry price ($20 per client/month billed annually)

Cons

  • Not a data source, it needs your actual SEO and ads tools underneath it
  • Integrations occasionally drop and need a manual reconnect
  • Per-client pricing can add up once you are managing a large roster

DataForSEO

DataForSEO

Best for Scale and Custom Dashboards
8.2/10
Best for: Agencies with a developer who want to build their own white-label client dashboards at volume

API-first SEO data platform for developers building SEO tools and software solutions

Why I like it:DataForSEO is the pick for agencies that would rather build than rent. It is a pure data API, so instead of paying for seats you pay per request, which gets dramatically cheaper than seat-based suites once you are running many clients. Because you build the reporting layer yourself, every client dashboard is white-label by default. Its AI Optimization API even lets you report on how clients show up inside ChatGPT and Google AI Overviews, which almost no seat-based tool offers yet. The trade is obvious: there is no interface, so this only makes sense if you have a developer.

Key Features

API-first access to SERP, keyword, backlink, on-page and Business dataPay-as-you-go pricing, no per-seat feesAI Optimization API tracks brand mentions in ChatGPT and Google AI OverviewsOfficial MCP server plus a hosted remote endpointData at a fraction of per-request cost versus seat-based suites

Solid agent foundation with official MCP and documented API. DataForSEO's MCP server and ChatGPT integration provide direct workflows, though the lack of OpenAPI specs and Claude support limits flexibility for multi-LLM agent stacks. Node SDK availability helps but webhooks and structured outputs would unlock more autonomous use cases.

Pros

  • Cheapest way to run SEO data at high volume, you pay per request not per seat
  • You own the front end, so every client dashboard is white-label by definition
  • New LLM Mentions API adds AI-answer visibility reporting for clients
  • Powers many of the SEO tools you already use, so the data is proven

Cons

  • No interface at all, you or a developer must build the reporting layer
  • Not usable by a non-technical account manager on its own
  • $50 minimum deposit to start

Screaming Frog

Screaming Frog

Best for Technical Audits
8.7/10
Best for: Agencies that need deep, repeatable technical crawls of client sites before and after fixes

Desktop SEO crawler for technical audits with unlimited crawling for $259/year

Why I like it:Screaming Frog is the tool almost every agency opens when a client site needs a real technical audit. It crawls the whole site the way Google would and surfaces the broken links, redirect chains, duplicate titles and hreflang mistakes that hold rankings back. It is a desktop app, not a client-facing dashboard, and it takes a little learning, but the depth is unmatched and the pricing is refreshing: one flat annual license rather than a per-seat subscription that scales with your team. Run it for audits, then report the findings through your suite.

Key Features

Desktop crawler that maps an entire site the way a search engine sees itFinds broken links, redirect chains, duplicate content and missing tagsXML sitemap, hreflang and canonical auditingJavaScript rendering plus GA, Search Console and PageSpeed integrationFree for up to 500 URLs, one flat annual license above that

Moderate agent-fit with official MCP support. Screaming Frog has an official MCP server and documented API with OAuth, making it accessible to Claude and Gemini workflows for technical SEO audits. The lack of OpenAPI specs, SDKs, and structured outputs limits deeper integration and makes parsing crawl data require custom handling.

Pros

  • The technical SEO standard, trusted for client audits across the industry
  • One flat annual license (around 259 GBP per year), not a per-seat subscription
  • Endlessly configurable, integrates Analytics and Search Console data into the crawl
  • Fast and thorough on large client sites once you learn it

Cons

  • Desktop software, so no cloud dashboards clients can log into
  • Steeper learning curve than a point-and-click suite
  • No white-label reporting on its own, you take the findings elsewhere

SurferSEO

SurferSEO

Best for Content Teams
9/10
Best for: Agencies producing client content at volume that need writers to hit a consistent on-page standard

AI visibility and SEO platform for optimizing content to rank and get cited across Google, ChatGPT, Gemini, and Perplexity

Why I like it:SurferSEO is not a full suite, it is the tool that keeps an agency content team consistent. When you have several writers producing client articles, its real-time content score gives everyone one target to hit, which makes output predictable and easy to QA. The briefs speed up production and the team workspaces fit a multi-writer setup. Pair it with one of the suites above for rank and backlink data. On its own it covers content, not the full picture.

Key Features

Content Editor with real-time on-page scoringShared team workspaces for writers and editorsSERP-based content briefs at scaleIntegrations with Google Docs and WordPress

Weak agent-fit without MCP support. SurferSEO has public API docs and native Claude integration, but lacks an MCP server, OpenAPI spec, and structured outputs that agent workflows typically need. The missing MCP means you'll be building custom integrations instead of using standard agent protocols.

Pros

  • Keeps a whole team of writers to one measurable on-page standard
  • Fast brief creation speeds up client content production
  • Team workspaces suit a multi-writer agency setup

Cons

  • Focused on on-page content, not a full SEO suite
  • Costs add up as you add writer seats
  • Scores can be over-optimised if writers chase the number

Moz

Moz

Best for Rank Tracking and Client Education
8.5/10
Best for: Agencies that want Domain Authority as a client-facing metric plus dependable rank tracking

Veteran SEO platform with 20+ years of experience and comprehensive toolkit for rankings, traffic, and optimization

Why I like it:Moz earns its spot on one thing clients already understand: Domain Authority. When you need a single, recognisable number to show a client their site is getting stronger, DA does the job better than any in-house metric, and the campaign structure maps neatly to a per-client setup. The rank tracking is dependable and Moz Academy is a real asset for training juniors and educating clients. The keyword and backlink data is thinner than Semrush or Ahrefs, so treat Moz as a tracking and client-education layer rather than your only tool.

Key Features

Avoid for agent workflows. Moz Pro has public API documentation, but lacks MCP support, OpenAPI specs, and any official SDKs, making it difficult to integrate into Claude or Cursor-based automation. You'd need custom API calls with minimal framework support.

Pros

  • Domain Authority is a widely recognised number clients already trust
  • Campaign structure maps cleanly to a per-client workflow
  • Moz Academy is genuinely useful for training staff and educating clients

Cons

  • Keyword and rank data is less extensive than Semrush or Ahrefs
  • Campaign limits on lower tiers cap how many clients you can track
  • Pricier per campaign than budget suites

BrightLocal

BrightLocal

Best for Local SEO Clients
Best for: Agencies with local or multi-location clients who need rankings, citations, GBP and reviews in one place

Local SEO platform for rank tracking, citations, and reviews, from $39/location/mo, now with an MCP server.

Why I like it:BrightLocal is the specialist for local. If your clients are restaurants, clinics, law firms or any multi-location brand, this is the tool that tracks their local rankings, builds and monitors their citations, audits their Google Business Profiles and manages their reviews, all in one place. General suites like Semrush and Ahrefs go wide on national SEO but do not go this deep on local. It is priced per location, which maps neatly to how agencies bill, and in January 2026 it launched an official MCP server, so you can query a client account from Claude. Pair it with a suite for the national side.

Pros

  • The dedicated local SEO standard, built for agencies and multi-location brands
  • Priced per location, so cost scales cleanly with each client you add
  • Launched an official MCP server, rare for a local tool, so agents can query client data
  • Consistently rated top of its class for customer support

Cons

  • Local-only, so pair it with a general suite for national SEO work
  • Interface can feel cluttered and reporting can be slow
  • Credit-based citation building is easy to misjudge on cost

Morningscore

Morningscore

Most Client-Friendly
Best for: Small agencies whose clients want a simple, readable view of progress, not a data firehose

Gamified all-in-one SEO and GEO tool: rank tracking, backlinks, audits, AI-visibility tracking, and an AI writer.

Why I like it:Morningscore solves a specific agency problem: clients who glaze over at a wall of metrics. Its gamified, plain-English interface and built-in task view make it easy to show a client exactly what you are doing and how their rankings are moving, without a training session. The dataset is smaller than the big suites and it lacks the deepest technical features, but for a small agency whose edge is communication and client trust, that readability is the whole point.

Decent agent fit, and unusually open for the price. Morningscore includes full API access on every plan, even the $69 Lite tier, and also sells a standalone SEO API (keywords, backlinks, site health, Moz-powered link data), so an agent or script can pull both SEO and AI-visibility data without an enterprise contract. WordPress and Shopify plugins add no-code automation for on-page fixes. There is no MCP server and no CLI, so there is no no-code path into Claude or ChatGPT yet. It is a data-and-workflow tool rather than an agent endpoint, but the API-on-entry pricing makes it more automatable than most tools in its bracket.

Pros

  • The easiest tool here for a non-technical client to understand
  • Task view makes the work you do visible to clients
  • Fair mid-market pricing

Cons

  • Smaller dataset than the big suites
  • Fewer deep-dive features for advanced technical audits
  • No MCP server yet

Methodology

How I chose these

I scored these tools on the things that actually matter to an agency rather than to a solo user: white-label and client-facing reporting, multi-client and multi-seat management, data depth, technical and local coverage, and price as it scales across a roster.

I also weighted AI-stack fit, whether a tool ships an official MCP server or a clean API an agent can use, because that is where client reporting is heading. Ranking is by agency fit, not affiliate payout. Ahrefs, Screaming Frog and BrightLocal have no affiliate relationship with me (BrightLocal's program is currently closed to new applicants), and they are on this list purely on merit.

Pricing was checked against each vendor at publication and can change, so confirm current rates before you buy.

FAQ

Frequently Asked Questions

For most small agencies I recommend SE Ranking. It offers white-label reports, client and project management, and an embeddable audit widget for lead generation, all at a price below Semrush and Ahrefs. If your bottleneck is client reporting rather than data, add AgencyAnalytics, which automates branded reports from $20 per client a month. Morningscore is the easiest option for clients to read.

AgencyAnalytics is the dedicated white-label reporting tool: it pulls data from your other platforms into branded client dashboards and scheduled PDF reports. Among the suites, SE Ranking, Semrush (via the Agency Growth Kit) and Serpstat all offer white-label reports under your own branding. DataForSEO is white-label by nature because you build the reporting front end yourself.

BrightLocal is the dedicated local SEO platform for agencies. It handles local rank tracking by location, citation building and monitoring, Google Business Profile audits, and review management in one place, priced per location so it scales with each client. General suites like Semrush and Ahrefs cover local as a feature, but BrightLocal goes far deeper, and it now ships an official MCP server for AI workflows.

Two ways. First, pick a suite that prices on usage (keywords tracked) rather than a steep per-seat model, which is where SE Ranking is more flexible than Semrush or the credit-based Ahrefs. Second, if you have a developer, a pay-as-you-go data API like DataForSEO can be dramatically cheaper at high client volume because you pay per request instead of per seat, and you build the client dashboards on top.

SE Ranking and Semrush both ship official MCP servers, so an AI assistant like Claude can pull live client data directly. AgencyAnalytics and BrightLocal launched official MCP servers too, which is rare for reporting and local tools. DataForSEO goes furthest for agencies building automation: an official MCP server, a hosted remote endpoint, and an AI Optimization API that reports how clients are mentioned inside ChatGPT and Google AI Overviews.
