What Online Course Platforms really cost once you sell

These platforms cannot be compared on subscribers or students, because each counts something different. What they do share is a cut of every sale, and it reorders them completely. Teachable is the cheapest to sign up for, but at $5,000 a month in sales Thinkific costs less.

in course sales per month

At $5,000 a month in sales, Podia costs $299/mo, which is #3 of 4.

  • Thinkific$54/mo
  • Kajabi$179/mo
  • Podia$299/mo
  • Teachable$414/mo

Charged per enrollment rather than as a percentage, so the total depends on your course price and cannot be ranked here:

Each figure is the vendor’s cheapest paid plan plus its published fee on that plan, applied to the sales figure you picked. Fees usually disappear on higher tiers, so a platform that looks expensive here can be the cheapest option once you are selling. Payment processor charges are separate and apply to all of them.

What else you pay

Podia charges beyond the plan price

One of these is effectively unavoidable, so the plan price on its own understates what Podia costs.

Read from Podia’s own pricing page. Where a charge is listed without an amount, the vendor prices it by destination or usage rather than publishing a single rate, so it is shown as charged separately rather than estimated here.

Editorial

My take on Podia pricing

Joonas Rotko
Joonas RotkoAuthor & founder of That Marketing Buddy

Podia's pricing reads cleanly across three tiers, but the catch sits on the entry plan. The $49/month Mover plan carries a 5% transaction fee, so your real cost climbs with revenue.

The $99/month Shaker plan kills the transaction fee and adds affiliate tools, upsells, PayPal, and Zapier. Once you clear about $1,000/month in sales, upgrading pays for itself. Earthquaker at $179/month is the unlimited tier for creators scaling a real team. Annual billing shaves roughly 15% off any of them, and the 30-day trial lets you build and test before paying a cent.

Hidden Costs

What the pricing page doesn't tell you

1

5% transaction fee on the Mover plan

Only the $49/month entry plan charges it, and it lands on top of Stripe or PayPal processing rather than replacing it. At $2,000/month in sales that is another $100 a month, which is why Shaker pays for itself somewhere around $1,000/month in sales.

2

Email subscriber caps that force a tier upgrade

Subscriber capacity is tied to your plan rather than priced on its own. A list that outgrows its cap pushes you to the next tier whether or not you need anything else that comes with it.

3

Video storage and product counts capped by tier

Video hosting limits, product counts and community spaces all scale with the plan. At least one G2 reviewer reported limits changing after they had already built out content their customers had paid for.

4

No permanent free plan

The 30-day trial is generous and needs no card, but it ends. Systeme.io and Thinkific both keep a free tier if you need to stay at zero indefinitely.

Verdict

Is Podia Worth the Price?

Podia's pricing makes sense if you're already selling courses and want everything (community, coaching, email, events) in one place. The 5% transaction fee on Mover means it's not ideal for beginners just testing the waters. Established creators do well on Shaker, and Earthquaker covers anyone who needs unlimited everything.

But newcomers who want a permanent free tier might prefer Systeme.io or Thinkific. The lack of a public API also limits automation for agencies or tech-savvy users.

FAQ

Frequently Asked Questions

The Mover plan charges 5% on every sale. Shaker and Earthquaker have no Podia transaction fees. Stripe and PayPal still add their standard 2.9% + 30 cents regardless of plan.

Zapier and PayPal integrations unlock on Shaker and Earthquaker, opening up broader automation. Mover keeps to Podia's built-in tools.
