For a web development agency sending transactional emails for client projects, Essential covers the API needs at $17/month. Add Premium if you need A/B testing and automation for marketing campaigns.
Volume-based pricing means unlimited contacts at no extra charge. If you have 50,000 contacts but only send 2-3 campaigns per month, Mailjet Essential at $17/month is dramatically cheaper than per-contact tools that would charge $200+/month at that list size. For an alumni association sending a monthly newsletter to a large membership base, this model saves real money.
If you send daily emails to your full list, the volume-based pricing works against you. My take on Mailjet pricing

Mailjet's volume-based pricing is either brilliant or problematic depending on your sending patterns. For businesses with large contact lists and moderate sending frequency, it's the cheapest option available. Unlimited contacts on every paid plan means a 50,000-subscriber list costs the same as 500 subscribers, as long as your email volume stays the same.
The weakness is feature gating. Automation and A/B testing are locked behind Premium at $27/month, while Moosend includes both at $7/month. Mailjet's real strength is as a developer tool: the API, SMTP relay, and multi-user collaboration make it practical for technical teams that need both marketing and transactional email through one platform.
