Customer.io Pricing: Behavioral Messaging Starting at $100/Month

Customer.io is not cheap, and it is not trying to be. Starting at $100/month for 5,000 profiles, it costs 5-10x more than traditional email marketing tools at the same subscriber count. The premium pays for behavioral messaging infrastructure that most competitors do not offer: event-driven workflows across email, push, SMS, in-app, and WhatsApp, plus a lightweight CDP.

At 500 contacts, Customer.io costs $100/mo on Essentials, which is #22 of 24 in Email Marketing. Mailchimp, the most-reviewed option here, costs $27/mo at the same volume.

Priced in another currency, so listed separately rather than ranked:

The vendor’s own price is on the left. The dollar figure is my conversion at rates taken on 2026-08-06, shown only to give a sense of scale. These vendors do not set their dollar price by converting, so the approximation is not what you would be charged and is not used for ranking.

Some tools do not publish a price at exactly 500 contacts. Those show the next tier up, which is what you would actually pay: EmailOctopus at 2,500, Flodesk at 1,000, beehiiv at 2,500, Loops at 1,000, Sender at 2,500, Buttondown at 1,000.

Each median is the middle price of the cheapest plan covering that level, across the 36 Email Marketing tools on this site. Tools that publish no price at a level are excluded from that row rather than estimated, which is why coverage varies. “Most reviewed” uses combined third-party review counts as a stand-in for popularity. These are list prices before overage, add-ons and seat charges.

Recommendation

Which plan should you choose?

+
EssentialsSaaS and Product-Led Companies

Essentials at $100/month delivers the core Customer.io value: event-driven workflows across email, push, SMS, and in-app messages. For a project management SaaS with 3,000 users that needs behavioral onboarding sequences and feature adoption nudges, Essentials covers the multi-channel messaging needs without the $1,000/month Premium jump.

+
PremiumScale-Ups with Data Infrastructure

The $1,000/month Premium plan adds data warehouse sync, premium integrations, HIPAA compliance, and a dedicated CSM. For a healthtech startup with 50,000 users that needs to sync messaging data to Snowflake and maintain HIPAA compliance, Premium is the minimum viable plan. The 1-year event retention (vs 90 days on Essentials) is critical for long-term behavioral analysis.

+
Use a different toolTraditional Email Marketers

If you need to send newsletters, promotions, and basic automation sequences, Customer.io is the wrong tool at the wrong price. Moosend at $7/month, MailerLite at $10/month, or even ActiveCampaign at $15/month deliver traditional email marketing features at 7-15x lower cost. Customer.io is engineering-grade messaging infrastructure, not a marketing tool.

+
Consider Loops firstEarly-Stage Startups

At $49/month for 5,000 contacts, Loops offers SaaS-focused email with event-driven workflows at half the price of Customer.io Essentials. If you primarily need email (not multi-channel) and want a simpler setup, Loops is the pragmatic starting point. Migrate to Customer.io when you need push, SMS, in-app messaging, or deeper data infrastructure.

My take on Customer.io pricing

Joonas Rotko
Joonas RotkoAuthor & founder of That Marketing Buddy

Customer.io's pricing is honest about what it is: enterprise messaging infrastructure at enterprise prices. The $100/month starting point filters out businesses that need basic email marketing and attracts the product teams that benefit from event-driven, multi-channel workflows. Compared to Loops ($49/month), you are paying double for multi-channel messaging and deeper data infrastructure.

The $100-to-$1,000 Premium jump is the pricing model's weakest point. Many growing companies outgrow Essentials (90-day data retention, no warehouse sync) but cannot justify a 10x price increase. That gap leaves mid-market companies in an awkward position, either paying for features they do not fully need or living with Essentials limitations.

If you are a SaaS company with product-led growth, Customer.io Essentials earns its $100/month. If you are exploring options, try Loops at half the price first. For traditional email marketing, Moosend at $7/month does more for less. See the full Customer.io review.

Hidden Costs

What the pricing page doesn't tell you

From Buddy's analysis

SMS sends are priced separately as 'custom' even on the base plans, and Premium requires annual billing starting at $1,000/month. Many enterprise features like HIPAA compliance and dedicated hardware have additional costs not shown in base pricing.

Verdict

Is Customer.io Worth $100+/Month?

Customer.io is worth the price for exactly one audience: product-led companies that need event-driven, multi-channel messaging infrastructure. If you are sending onboarding sequences triggered by in-product behavior across email, push, and SMS, Customer.io handles that use case and the $100/month is justified.

If you need traditional email marketing (newsletters, promotions, basic automation), you are paying enterprise prices for features you will not use. Moosend at $7/month or MailerLite at $10/month covers those needs at a fraction of the cost. Read my full Customer.io review for the complete breakdown.

For a lighter, SaaS-focused alternative that starts free and ships an MCP server for agent access, Sequenzy is worth comparing.

FAQ

Frequently Asked Questions

No. Customer.io offers a 14-day free trial with up to 200 profiles. No credit card required for the trial. After the trial, the minimum plan is Essentials at $100/month.

Customer.io charges based on your peak profile count during the billing period. If your profiles spike to 8,000 during a launch but normally sit at 4,000, you pay for the 8,000 tier that month. You can delete profiles to reduce your count, but deleted profiles lose all historical data.

Essentials and above include email, push notifications (iOS, Android, web), SMS, in-app messages, WhatsApp, and LINE. All channels can be mixed within a single automated workflow.

The $100 to $1,000 jump reflects the enterprise features Premium unlocks: data warehouse sync, HIPAA compliance, premium integrations, dedicated CSM, and 1-year data retention. Premium targets companies with meaningful scale and data infrastructure needs. Most growing SaaS companies can operate on Essentials until they hit the 75,000-profile threshold or need compliance features.

ActiveCampaign starts at $15/month and focuses on traditional email marketing with CRM capabilities. Customer.io starts at $100/month and focuses on behavioral, multi-channel messaging for product teams. The overlap is minimal: ActiveCampaign for marketing automation, Customer.io for product-led messaging.

Yes. Annual billing typically offers 10-20% savings compared to monthly billing on Essentials and Premium plans.
