Frase API

Yes. Frase runs a documented REST API at https://next.frase.io/api/v1 with a public OpenAPI spec, so you can pull content briefs, SERP research, and optimization data straight into your own stack. See frase.io/features/mcp for the full reference.

What is the Frase API?

Frase's public API is documented at https://next.frase.io/api/docs with a full OpenAPI spec at https://next.frase.io/openapi.json, which means you can auto-generate a client in whatever language you work in. Auth is an API key via the X-API-KEY header using scoped sk_live_* keys. The base URL is https://next.frase.io/api/v1.

There are no official SDKs listed, so you're working from the OpenAPI spec directly. That's fine for most teams, code generators handle it, but if you were hoping for a maintained Python or JS library, it isn't here. Webhooks exist though: a /webhooks endpoint is part of the API, so you can build event-driven flows instead of polling.

What you build with it: content briefs, SERP and topic research, content audits, and optimization scoring wired into your CMS or internal editorial tooling. The API mirrors much of what the MCP server exposes, so it's the right choice when you want deterministic integration code rather than an agent making its own calls.

Pricing, limits, and integration

Every plan includes both API and MCP access, starting at Starter for $39/month, then Professional at $103/month and Scale at $239/month, with Enterprise on custom annual pricing. Rate limits scale with the tier: 20 requests/min on Starter, 60/min on Professional, 200/min on Scale. If your agent runs heavy multi-tool workflows, Starter's 20/min ceiling will feel tight fast.

How much does the Frase API actually cost?

Verify on docs

Frase publishes an API, but per-tier gating wasn't extracted automatically.

  • Most likely scenario: API access is either included in all paid plans, or it's gated to higher tiers and we need to verify on the live docs page.
  • Until verified, treat the question "which plan unlocks the API" as open. Don't budget on the assumption it's free with the cheapest paid plan.

Which AI clients can read Frase data?

Not every AI assistant supports MCP natively. Here's the per-client picture for Frase specifically.

ClientSupportNotes
Claude CodeNative MCPInstall via `claude mcp add frase -- npx -y @frase/mcp-server`; authenticate with FRASE_API_KEY.
Claude (Desktop/Web)Third-party bridgenpm-based local MCP server (@frase/mcp-server) run via npx; documented for AI coding assistants and custom workflows.
CursorThird-party bridgeLocal MCP server runnable via npx; not explicitly named but MCP is aimed at AI coding assistants.

Frase also has an MCP server

If you're wiring Frase into Claude / Cursor / Codex, the MCP server is usually less code than the REST API.

What you can build with the Frase API

Three personas, three different shapes of build. Pick the row that matches how you actually ship.

SOLO DEV / FOUNDER

Glue Frase into your daily workflow

  • Pull a digest of ranking changes into your morning Slack
  • Trigger a one-off backfill when something looks off
  • Pipe data into your own SQLite for ad-hoc queries
Effort: A weekend, one Node or Python script
AGENCY / CONSULTANT

Sell Frase reporting at scale

  • White-label Frase data into client-branded dashboards
  • Run scheduled multi-account reports without logging into the Frase UI
  • Cross-reference with the rest of the client's stack (CRM, analytics, ad spend)
Effort: 1-2 weeks, hits multi-tenant auth quickly
IN-HOUSE ENGINEER

Production pipelines for Frase

  • Real-time sync into your warehouse via webhooks
  • Custom alerts the dashboard's built-in alerting can't express
  • Backfill + idempotency handling for Frase data older than the dashboard exposes
Effort: Multi-week project, expect rate-limit tuning

Quickstart template

# Starter template — endpoint paths and SDK package names come from
# the Frase API docs: https://www.frase.io/features/mcp

curl -X GET "https://www.frase.io/<your-endpoint>" \
  -H "Authorization: Bearer $TOKEN" \
  -H "Accept: application/json" | jq .

Template only. Endpoint paths, exact base URL, and auth header format come from frase.io/features/mcp.

Limits and gotchas

  • OpenAPI is published — auto-generated clients work out of the box. Saves writing wrappers by hand.
  • Webhooks available — react to Frase events in real time instead of polling.
  • No official SDK detected. Plan on hitting the API directly with your HTTP client of choice.
  • Rate limits: always read the docs page before scaling — the published limit is usually lower than the practical one and overages can be expensive.
  • No-code fallback: Zapier cover the common triggers if you want to skip writing API code for simple flows.
8/10

Agent-readiness verdict

The API is a genuine content-ops toolkit, not a bolt-on afterthought, backed by a public OpenAPI spec and webhook support that most SEO tools skip. The missing piece is official SDKs, so budget a little time generating a client from the spec. If you're building automated content pipelines, this holds up. A solid 8 out of 10.

Moderate agent-fit with community MCP support. Frase offers a documented public API and native Claude integration, but lacks official MCP hosting, OpenAPI specs, and structured outputs that would unlock fuller agentic capabilities. The community MCP server bridges some gaps, though relying on third-party maintenance introduces continuity risk.

Frase API FAQ

Does Frase have a public API?+
Yes — REST API at frase.io/features/mcp, auth via api_key.
What auth does the Frase API use?+
api_key
Is there an OpenAPI / Swagger spec I can auto-generate clients from?+
Does Frase support webhooks?+
Yes — webhooks are available on standard plans.
Should I use the API or the MCP server for Claude / Cursor / Codex?+
Prefer the MCP server for agent workflows — it's less code and pre-handles auth flows. Use the REST API for scheduled jobs, dashboards, and anything outside an LLM-driven flow.
